Review of DEMENTIA AND HOPE TRAILS - PARTS OF THE SEA

Dementia & Hope Trails is the solo project of prolific experimental musician Justin Marc Lloyd. Justin has performed in a multitude of bands and projects and has been releasing a constant stream of visual and musical content for some time.

Some people will argue that the idea of consistently releasing material comes at the expense of said material lacking in quality. At times this theory does prove to be true, especially when taking into account the tradition of productivity that is so abundant in musical circles such as drone, ambient, and noise which have been made all so susceptible to these accusations. Fortunately, Dementia & Hope Trails proves these accusations wrong; given the amount of content and even more so the quality of it ‘Parts of the Sea’ holds it’s own rather well. The first part of this double album features six tracks while the second half are three much lengthier racks, two of which reach past the 20 minute mark with the entire album coming to a nearly whopping two hours. Because of this I think it is important to keep in mind that like many other drone and ambient projects this is an album that is best experienced in one full uninterrupted listen (mood lighting optional).

Like any good piece of epic work, whether it be literature, film, or in this case music it is careful to begin things slowly which is apparent in the first track. Track two starts to pick the music up; ‘We Sent Hearts Soaring’ is a massive, beautiful soundscape brimming with the normal lush ambient swells, spacey echoes, and a catalogue of many other strange, uncommon, and ethereal sounds that make for a lush but calm track.

Another standout track, “Hazy Love Drifting Down A River” airy washes of slow moving chords flood over the listener. Eventually it all builds into a loud monolithic construction, intensely so, although not in such a way that it is unlistenable or intrusively noisy but in a self-liberating way that is not so structurally different from a Godspeed! crescendo. While listening, getting lost in the dense clutter of sound it is hard to forget that all of this is being created on the spot and when it comes to improvisation, proper attention to detail is crucial in not ruining the delicate pace and tonal atmospheric qualities of what one is attempting to accomplish. There are plenty of laid back repetitious moments as to be expected but Justin does well in making sure not to bore the listener making sure to implement a good deal of recognizable sounds and by that I mean sounds that actually sound like they are being made with an instrument.

Justin’s colorful visual aesthetic transfers over in his music, sometimes to the point of being saturated in a colorful palette of sound. Seas of shimmering reverb, crushing slabs of psychedelic noise, organ-esque synth tones, and cascading volume swells that seem to go on forever all add to the complexly layered construction of these songs. Some of the textures on ‘Still Replaying’ are so vibrant and colorful that it makes it hard to believe that ‘Parts of the Sea’ was completely improvised all in a single take on guitar with no overdubs when it was recorded. Some of the songs actually sound like they were composed, written out prior to being recorder. The sounds on these albums are like tearing into a pack of gummy worms, they’re colorful and delicious except in this case the gummy worms last nearly two hours and are the size of a mountain. Maybe that was a bad analogy…

‘Sunflower’, which is probably the most progressive track on the album in that it is constantly evolving and building to a climax. Although it ranks in as the second longest track at 24 minutes it is possibly the most accessible piece of music on the album. Although I feel that ‘Sunflowers’ is probably the best track (my personal favorite at least) I do feel that the guitars may be a little too trebly, especially for a track that lasts 24 minutes. Sometimes it can be grating for those who are not as familiar with noisier elements in ambient music, especially taking into account the recording style which sometimes contains peaks in volume. There are so many sounds on this sprawling epic of a release that it calls for multiple listens in order to fully digest the product of something so expansive. The final and longest track, “I Miss You, Don’t Fall Asleep Yet” is a cathartic journey of transcendental ambience and psychedelic noise. It eventually mellows out into a looping state of modulated drones. As the track continues more guitar tones get thrown into the mix of the composition building off of each other, reverberating and echoing up to the end of the album where distant vocals can be heard singing the title of the song.

As much as I just want to praise this album and not say anything negative about it, ‘Parts of the Sea’ is not free of it’s shortcomings. Although I cannot respect the spirit of this style of music and the improvised nature of it enough, the fact that it was improvised is somewhat of a flaw. For being completely made up on the spot the music is great, more than great actually but I feel as though it is not fully realized. It makes me wonder what Justin could have done if he had recorded other tracks overtop of what he had or manipulated the end result in post-production. Choosing a recording style, especially one like this is a crucial decision that sometimes opens up possibilities and other times restrains the musician causing them to work around whatever negative aspects that come with it This is of course a very small flaw seeing that end result sounds like a realized piece of music and as I mentioned previously, some parts of the album actually sound like they were written prior to recording as though they wren’t improvised at all.

The album starts off simple enough, some pretty ambient soundscapes, nothing out of the ordinary for ambient music but then everything takes a left turn and about halfway through the second track you realize that you are on a very different kind of ride, something so different and futuristic that it will surely take more than one listen to digest. It is all constantly changing, always moving, seamlessly shifting, deconstructing and reconstructing itself in so many ways. At times is is soothing and at other times it is apocalyptic and frightening, a formula for an instant classic. ’Parts of the Sea’ is always something different with each listen and is almost never uninteresting or boring. There is very little I can say about this negatively. This is surely the result of trial and error, passed time, hours of messing around, doing things wrong and not giving a fuck if it is correct in the normal sense of what is considered “right” in music; this is indeed the work of a musician who has nearly perfected his craft.

Recommended: Similar to attempting to stay awake in a house full of carbon monoxide while consuming an overwhelming amount of candy and ultimately failing. Progressive and futuristic. A monolithic audible depiction of spacial and apocalyptic visions. In the “about” section of the Facebook page it describes the music as being like “if This Will Destroy You actually destroyed itself”.

ABOUT ETHERIC CORDS
The chakras often have “etheric cords” protruding from them. These cords, which look like surgical tubing, extend to chakras in other people with whom we’ve had relationships.

Etheric cords most commonly extend to our siblings, followed by (in descending order of what is most commonly found) our father, mother, ex-spouse, ex-lovers, current spouse or lover, our house, children, and close friends.

Fear within our relationships forms these cords. The fear may be characterized as co-dependency, attachments, fear of abandonment, or unforgiveness. Etheric cords act like hoses, with energy directed back and forth between both people. Therein lies the problem with having them.

If the person to whom you are attached is having a life challenge, that person will siphon energy from you. He or she will draw upon your energy supply through the etheric cord. You will then feel drained, without knowing why.

Very often, the people you have had sexual relationships with are attached to your sacral chakra. The people with whom you’ve experienced conflict are attached to your solar plexus. Those who you grieve over are attached to your heart chakra. Those with whom you’ve had painful relationships, or relationships where you carried all the weight, are attached to your shoulders. This is, in my experience, the root cause of shoulder and neck pain.

A female client complained of having multiple life challenges in her finances, health, and love life. I immediately saw that she had many large etheric cords extending from her back and shoulders. I discerned that the cords were attached to her deceased father, with whom she’d had a contentious relationship. I asked her to be willing to forgive her father, as we cut the cords. Simultaneously, I asked her father to be willing to forgive himself, since he was remorseful about his past relationship with his daughter. When both were completely willing to forgive, the cords parted. My client reported immediate improvements in all areas of her life following our session.

When we are attached to our home or geographical locations, etheric cords extend from the bottom of our feet, into the ground. I recently worked with a client who said she wanted to move. However, she complained that her house wasn’t selling. I saw she had many etheric cords extending from the bottom of her feet, into the house’s foundation. I explained that her attachment to the home was preventing its sale. With her permission, we cut the cords. Two days later, her house sold at the full asking price.

Cutting cords doesn’t mean, “I don’t love you or care about you anymore.” Cord cutting doesn’t necessarily lead to break-ups or abandoned relationships. It simply means that you are releasing the dysfunctional parts of your relationships. Remember, fear is the opposite of love, and etheric cords (and all attachments) are created from fear.

Some people worry they may cut cords to their own soul fragments. That is, the parts of themselves that splintered off during traumatic episodes. This is unlikely to occur; however, you can avoid it entirely by holding the intention of only cutting the cords which block you from feeling full joy and energy. Your soul fragment cords will remain uncut by holding this intention.

Or, you can call back your soul fragments and reintegrate yourself by visualizing a shower of white light encircling your body. Mentally ask all pieces of yourself be completely reunited with your true self. You may see little “you’s” bounding toward you, like little beings on rubber bands bungie jumping in your direction. These little soul fragments will be completely healed of all residuals of fear or trauma as they re-enter you through the white light shower.

CUTTING ETHERIC CORDS
The fastest and simplest way to cut etheric cords is to mentally call Archangel Michael to come to your side, and clear away all cords that are draining you. If you are unfamiliar with Archangel Michael, he is an angel who acts as a “manager” of other angels. His primary role is to clear away all dark energy. You can ask Archangel Michael to come to your side anytime. You can even ask him to live with you permanently. He has the ability (as does everyone, in truth) to be with everyone simultaneously.

You will notice an immediate increase in energy and peacefulness when you ask Michael to cut your cords. The next time you feel lethargic, skip the mocha latte and call upon the angels instead. They will return you to your natural state of peaceful energy right away.

Affirm that all of your Karma concerning communication is now balanced in all directions of time, all is well.

WHAT ARE ETHERIC CORDS?
Etheric cords are energetic connections that can form between two people. Negative cords are formed out of fear-based emotions such as loneliness, excessive anger, depression, co-dependency, abuse, addiction, unforgiveness, revenge, and other negative emotions. Cords can also develop after break-ups, divorces, job changes, and other life changing events. Healers, caregivers, massage therapists, and nurturing people can develop cords that drain them, causing chronic fatigue syndrome and healer’s burnout, as the people whom they help unknowingly attach etheric cords to them. The removal of these cords is essential to their health and well-being.

After removing negative etheric cords, you will feel lighter, freer, and more at peace. Cutting negative cords between you and someone else does not mean, “I don’t love you or care about you anymore,” and having these cords in the first place does not mean that you are abnormal, guilty, or to blame. Cord cutting does not lead to break-ups or abandoned relationships. It is simply a release of the dysfunctional aspects of those relationships. Cords of love are beneficial and can never be severed. These cords can never be broken and are not effected by the cord cutting process.

When we have fear-based attachments to a person or an object, we form spiritual leashes to keep the person or object from leaving or changing. These leashes look like surgical tubing and they grow larger as a function of the length and intensity of the relationship. So, the largest cords are to parents, siblings, and other longtime, intense relationships.

The cords are hollow tubes, and energy runs back and forth between the attached persons. These are fear-based cords, which are always unhealthy and based upon dysfunction. They have nothing to do with the love or the healthy part of the relationship. Cutting cords isn’t abandoning or divorcing a person; it’s releasing the unhealthy part of the relationship.

Let’s say that you have a cord attached to friend or relative who’s feeling depressed or needy. That person will begin draining energy from you, like siphoning fuel at a gas station. You’ll feel tired without knowing why. No amount of caffeine, exercise or sleep will be able to revive your energy if the source is etheric-cord draining.

People who are professional helpers, such as teachers, counselors, and healers, often have a lot of cords attached to their students and patients. So it’s important to cut cords after every session of helping someone, or whenever you feel physical pain or lethargy without any apparent reason. Cords can grow back if the relationship resumes with fear mingled in it.

CORD CUTTING WITH ARCHANGEL MICHAEL
Michael carries a sword that cuts all attachments to negativity. Simply think the thought, `Archangel Michael, I call upon you now. Please cut the cords of fear that are draining my energy and vitality.’ Sit quietly while he cuts your cords. He’ll send healing energy through the severed cords to both you and the other person.

CUTTING CORDS TO MATERIAL OBJECTS
A telltale sign that you’re etherically corded to a material object is when it won’t sell at any price. Many people with whom I’ve worked have cords to their homes and automobiles, because a part of them doesn’t want to sell the item. Consequently, no amount of advertising or price slashing works.

Cords to objects generally grow from the bottom of the person’s feet and are attached to the part of the item where one is most attached. If you truly want to sell an item, ask Archangel Michael to cut the cords from the bottom of your feet, and be assured that something better will replace the item. Know that the next person who owns it will benefit from your generous “releasement.”

Jessica Rylan - Lush Life

Jessica Rylan is a sound artist and electronic musician who lives and performs in the Boston area, where she grew up. The main focus of her work to date has been the design and construction modular synthesizers which use analog electronic circuits to create a diversity of sounds. She uses her synthesizers in installations at galleries and also in her high-energy, live musical performances.

She performs extensively throughout New England and has also undertaken several national tours which have taken her from Boston all the way to Seattle and San Francisco. She has also performed live on the radio and was featured in a PBS documentary in March, 2003.

She has created sound installations for such places as the LIST Gallery for Visual Arts at MIT, the Boston Center for Contemporary Art, Bard College, the Berwick Research Institute and the Massachusetts College of Art.

She has an MFA in electronic music from Bard College, Avondale-on-Hudson, New York and has received grants from the Penny McCall Foundation and the LEF Foundation.

Can't is Jessica Rylan, a Boston-based instrument inventor, electronics hobbyist and vocalist who makes some of the most unarmoured and awkwardly intimate noise music ever knowingly purchased by power-electronics fans.

Sonically, Rylan shares a similar hand-carved space to the early work of Voice Crack members Andy Guhl and Norbert Moslang, taking their whole concept of "cracked everyday electronics" to very personal ends, with synthesizers that sound almost as if they were home-baked lending an evocative layer of dissonance to her otherwise unaccompanied folk songs and nursery rhymes. Rylan uses this kind of base melodic material in a way that's as ambiguous and disconcerting as Jandek's trilogy of a capella recordings, working little-girl showtunes and desperate, whispered reveries into alternately distressing and endearing forms.

It'd be far too easy to simply describe what Rylan does in terms of "feminising" noise, regardless of just how necessary that may be. Rather, Rylan uses noise as a way of clearing enough space and prociding enough high-colume cover to fully let her guard down. The result is a revelatory marriage of avant garde form and intuitive, almost diarist-style, folk documentation.

These corporations, if they were individual human beings, would be locked up for life. Instead, they continue raking in the big bucks. Human rights abuses, murder, war, eco disasters, and animal exploitation keep these evil companies raking in the green. Prepare to be disgusted.
Chevron : (then Texaco) discharged 18 billion gallons of toxic water into the rain forests of Ecuador without any remediation, destroying the livelihoods of local farmers and sickening indigenous populations. Chevron was responsible for the death of several Nigerians who protested the company’s polluting, exploiting presence in the Nigerian Delta. Chevron paid the local militia,known for its human rights abuses, to squash the protests, and even supplied them with choppers and boats. The military opened fire on the protesters, then burned their villages to the ground.
DeBeers : was knowingly funding violent guerrilla movements in Angola, Sierra Nevada, and the Congo with its diamond purchases. In Botswana, DeBeers has been blamed for the “clearing” of land to be mined for diamonds — including the forcible removal of indigenous peoples who had lived there for thousands of years.The government allegedly cut off the tribe’s water supplies, threatened, tortured and even hanged resisters.
Tyson : Even if you don’t care about the horrendous animal abusethat has been documented in Tyson’s factory farms, you have to flinch at Tyson’s appalling environmental abuses and workers’ rights violation- Tyson has allowed e coli tainted beef to enter the food supply. A recent study showed that Tyson’s chickens were the most salmonella-and-campylobactor filled poultry of all the major suppliers and has even been accused of human trafficking to supply themselves with cheap labor.
Smith & Wesson : In a study of the top ten guns involved in crimein the U.S., the first was the Smith & Wesson .38 Special.
Phillip Morris : is the largest manufacturer of cigarettes in the U.S.
Haliburton : is a huge “oilfield services” company, profited big time from the U.S.’s invasion of Iraq when Cheney called in his boys to quell burning oil wells — and to “help” the Iraq oil ministrypump and distribute oil. Haliburton has also been implicated in countless oil spills, including the BP disaster of 2010.
Coca Cola : corporation has wrought devastation in India, where its factories use up to one million liters of water per day, leaving tens of thousands of nearby residents dry during the drought months. Then the factories dispose of the wastewater improperly,contaminating whatever water is left.  A lawsuit in 2001 accused Coca Cola of hiring paramilitaries in Columbia which suppressed unionization in the cola plant there through intimidation, torture and murder.
Pfizer : the largest pharmaceutical corporation in the U.S., pleaded guilty in 2009 to the largest health care fraud in U.S. history.Pfizer decided to use Nigerian children as guinea pigs. In 1996, Pfizer traveled to Kano, Nigeria to try out an experimental antibiotic on third-world diseases such as measles, cholera, and bacterial meningitis. They gave trovafloxacin to approximately 200 children. Dozens of them died in the experiment, while many others developed mental and physical deformities. According to the EPA, Pfizer can also proudly claim to be among the top ten companies in America causing the most air pollution.
ExxonMobil : is perhaps best known for the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill which resulted in 11 million gallons of oil contaminating Prince William Sound. But they have also been responsible for a huge oil spill in Brooklyn and for aiding in the decline of Russia’s critically endangered grey whale because of drilling in its habitat. The Political Economy Research Institute ranks ExxonMobil sixth among corporations emitting airborne pollutants in the United States.
Caterpillar : supplies the Israeli army with bulldozers which are used to demolish Palestinian homes — sometimes with the people still inside. In 2003 a Caterpillar bulldozer ran over and killed Rachel Corrie, an American protesting in Gaza who stood in front of the tractor to prevent the destruction of a Palestinian home.
Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Baily : “The Cruelest Show on Earth” is famous for its abuse of wild animals.
Monsanto : Monsanto’s list of evils includes creating the“terminator” seed which creates plants which never fruit or flower so that farmers must purchase them anew yearly, lobbying to have “hormone-free” labels removed from the labels of milk and infant milk replacer (through bovine growth hormone is believed to be a cancer-accelerator) as well as a wide range of environmental and human health violations associated with use of Monsanto’s poisons — most notably “Agent Orange.”
Nestle : crimes against man and nature include massive deforestation in Borneo — the habitat of the critically endangered orangutan — to grow palm oil, and buying milk from farms illegally-seized by a despot in Zimbabwe. Nestle attractedworldwide boycott efforts for urging mothers in third-world countries to use their infant milk replacer instead of breastfeeding, without warning them of the possible negative effects. Supposedly, Nestle hired women to dress as nurses to hand out free infant formula, which was frequently mixed with contaminated water, or the children starved when the formula ran out and their mothers could not afford more and their breast milk had already dried up from disuse.
British Petroleum : Who can forget 2010’s oil rig explosion in the Gulf Coast which killed 11 workers and thousands of birds, sea turtles, dolphins and other animals, effectively destroying the fishing and tourism industry in the region? This was not BP’s first crime against nature. In fact, between January 1997 and March 1998, BP was responsible for a whopping 104 oil spills.
Dyncorp : is best known for its brutality in impoverished countries,for trafficking in child sex slaves, for slaughtering civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan, and for training rebels in Haiti. This privatized military company is often hired by the U.S. government to protect American interests overseas — and so the government can claim no responsibility for Dyncorp’s actions.

2004 JML in my sweet Underoath shirt

Last night I discovered a box of tapes from my childhood full of 4-track masters of music I had recorded. This is all 10-15 years ago. There are so many sweet riffs I recorded that I can use for my band New Years considering a lot of this stuff is pre-A Perfect Kiss demo material that didn't make it's way into the band. Lots of field recordings to load into the Inappropriate King Live library as well! If i find any full songs that are decent enough to post, I will. I am not sure how they will be titled, maybe just under my full name. I'd love to share some of these tracks. A lot of them are super amateur sounding, but there is an innocent and unique quality about them that I'm excited to make public.

This one has been sitting on my shelf for some time. I am almost positive Dan Smith (Neon Blossom label, Red Electric Rainbow, Dead Pilots, Neon Marshmallow festival, etc.) gave it to me when I was in Chicago on tour. Really good harsh noise. Nothing more to say. It's not boring at all, yet it's constant and always moving frantically. It's not the cut-up style, but there are just interesting textures. Something so much harsh just doesn't have.

Brobdingnagian is an experimental doom/black metal/harsh noise collective manned by Andy Krupinski who lives in Austin, TX (also of the infamous shoegaze/black metal band Crooked Necks with Shane of Hostage Pageant). I had the pleasure of playing in Brobdingnagian last night near DC as well as some other local friends Eric Trude (Stress Orphan) and Matt Boettke (Sex Complex, Scant, Borborites). I did electronics and vocals. Matt was on a kick drum-less drumset. Andy does electronics and vocals. Eric was on electronics. There was also a bass played by someone I don't know. There was also a sixth person. I'm not sure what he was doing. I don't know, I was really fucking out of it.

This guy has made his way into my top 5 favorite noise artists of all time. I just cannot get enough of searching out all of his works include the large amount of collaborations he's done. He's a 50 year old Dutch dude into free improvisation. He started out doing free jazz drums but now does stuff with a lot of home-made or altered electronics and visuals. He does a lot with manipulating white and pink noise and also uses FM radio transmitters. It's truly hypnotic. Sometimes his material gets pretty mangled and mutilated with careful use of feedback and oscillators.

I really like something he said in an article in The Wire years ago. "A solo performance is about getting them to go in the direction you want, in accordance with how you feel and what sounds good in the room with the PA, then bringing that energy to the public and cleaning the club walls with the sound system. Some people seemed even to like the PrinsLive CD (released on GROB) for that reason;
they listen to it loud and start cleaning their house."

And the same article described him as "a more abrasive Keith Rowe with radio shards roughened up, spurting, spluttering and stammering."

One of the BEST groups around right now. Again, reminds me of Gert-Jan Prins's style (yes, I am obsessed with him). Maybe some Joe Colley. A little bit of Portland's God. However, there is a lot more variety because there are three people in this group. Think of some of Wolf Eyes' weirdest stuff. Possibly some Spykes material with three layers rather than one. Maybe throw in some tapes and other samples. Short bursts of harsh walls here and there, but mostly quiet and spacious. Very strange. Featuring Peter J Woods if you can believe it!

This split 7" is insane. The first side is a collaboration between Sore Throat and Bizarre Uproar that is both sore and bizarre. Side B is a remix by the almighty Facialmess. It's super choppy and chaotic, which is what is to be expected from Facialmess. I like this a little more than some of his other material, even though it's a remix, because there are more lazery-sounding synth noises in it. Gotta love lazers. This shit is so fucking good. I LOVE harsh noise that is strange. So much better than an hour of scrap metal through a death metal pedal. These go for around $30 these days.

Here is a 2006 tape released on Morbid Tapes of some pretty serious harsh noise. Sounds like lots of modulation, distortion and delay on mic feedback for the most part. A tired method of composing harsh sounds but this stuff is good. Nice textures and it stays interesting. As good as some of the old Prurient, in fact. I know nothing else of this project.

Here is a 1998 release on American Tapes between pre-Olson noise rock band Universal Indians and another noisy rock band called Gravitar. The Gravitar stuff starts out like any 90's underground punk band, but then this strange robotic voice comes for a while and then everything just falls apart and erupts while the drums keep wailing in a steady, medium pace. Really nice stuff. The second Gravitar track is thick with heavy synth drones and a jazzy beat that morph into a really sludgy jam with lots of noise and some other not-so-discernable things. I wish I wasn't just now hearing about this band.

The Universal Indians track is bad ass. Very 90's sounding as well. Sloppy drumming, haphazard blues guitar soloing. The end of the long track has some Dead Machines-sounding stuff going on. Slowed down drumming (obviously pre-recorded on a tape or record) along with some odd drones, chords and other sounds creeping along.

Not sure if this limited-to-12 2008 CDr actually live, or if The Giants Drink is a real venue, or what other kind of weirdness is behind this American Tapes-related project besides the sounds themselves, but I can tell that it's some sort of collaboration of lots of sparse, electronic manipulation with a few sound clips. Again, probably John Olson-related. American Tapes release number 752. I suppose I could do heavy research before posting shit like this, but it's all research you can do yourself if you like it enough. This is quality. Reminds me a bit of the Cor Fuhler+Gert-Jan Prins release I'm always raving about, but a bit more minimal and a bit less chaotic. Most likely a lot of home-made or home-altered devices and careful composition. There are around 6 or 7 releases by this project, and the editions are always incredibly small. Some only limited to 9. It's a shame, but it's definitely good enough to catch the ears of many people whom I know would love it. I guess that's why us bloggers do what we do.

I assume it's an Olson project. If so, it's definitely one of my favorites I've heard besides the obvious Wolf Eyes and Starecase. I could be wrong, though. Either way, it's an American Tapes release and it's just what the fuck I needed today. I love the crispness, sparseness and weirdness of these sounds. C90s are always a bit intimidating and potentially monotonous but not in this case. This is right up my alley. Crackle, crumble, no-input, warped tapes and/or records? Some of the source sounds might be some sort of electronic device that rattles (like a razor or toothbrush) with a contact mic or guitar pick-up of some sort. I may be completely off here. I don't even know. Far out shit. It's perfect and BEAUTIFUL.

Evil Moisture is Andy Bolus. This project is one of my biggest influences and gets my highest regards. It is quirky and weird while still remaining harsh and aggressive for the most part. That is my absolute favorite kind of noise. Andy does it perfectly. Damaged electronics, lots of no-input feedback, some short-wave radio fuckery and some other stuff I can't quite make out. There may be some sort of synth usage in here... probably modular, or at least a hand-made pedal of some sort. Either way, it's really amazing and right up my alley. One of my favorite releases ever. A good friend of mine does some really great noise/drone stuff with minimal gear out in the middle of nowhere, USA. He has only played one show because there is absolutely no noise scene and very little opportunity for exposure out there. Idaho? Utah? Something ridiculous like that. I've been to a few Utah towns, but I only saw nu-metal and punk. Which isn't a bad thing but... poor Derek. He also does reviews at my buddy Egan's website Existence Establishment. Some would say that site is full of elitist prickery, but I would only half agree. These guys aren't pricks but they know what they like and they are picky as shit. And thankfully so... their reviews are to the point, honest, and even constructive. No personal insults. In fact, if you dig deep enough, you'll find some old Sensible Nectar reviews Egan did where he tore me several new assholes because of how terrible they were. This gave me a lot of respect for the man and that is why I continue to send them my own stuff for review. Expect a review for the new Pregnant Spore Ache For c92 on there eventually.

One of the best releases in noise I've ever heard. Electronics, drums, vocals... haunting, heavy, diverse... makes me feel like my brain is in a vice and I'm having a schizophrenic freakout. Sort of along the lines of the approach to noise that Sword Heaven has but obviously not the same band for many reasons. Air Conditioning is some Philly people I think. Incredible stuff.

Definitely my favorite Cherry Point release. It's an unpopular opinion considering the wall is very diverse and has a large variety of textures, but that is why I like it. Although Phil Blankenship is known more for his sort-of-but-not-completely static walls, this shows a true talent in his ability to be dynamic and intricate.

At least 400 “Occupy Wall Street” protesters were arrested on Saturday as they tried to cross the Brooklyn Bridge, according to the New York Times.

The protesters have pledged to occupy Wall Street until something is done about corporate greed and corporate influence on the U.S. government. They have been camped out in New York’s old Liberty Plaza since September 17.

As approximately 1,500 protesters walked about a third of the way across the bridge, the police corralled hundreds of them with orange netting.

The police then began slowly arresting the protesters, according to AlterNet’s Kristen Gwynne.

“They’re arresting us one by one,” she said. “I just asked a cop and they said they’re going to arrest all of us. There are hundreds of people who don’t have room to sit down. We’re just clammed in.”

The New York Police Department said it only arrested protesters who had spilled out onto the roadway and impeded vehicle traffic.

“Protesters are asking able-bodied male people to go up to the cops and accept their arrest, to speed along the process,” Gwynne added. “Boyfriends and girlfriends are kissing each other goodbye as the guys go off to get arrested.”

Protesters claimed that New York police officers had purposefully led them onto the bridge roadway so that they could arrest them en masse.

A freelance journalist for the New York Times was among those arrested.

Occupy Wall Street is the beginning of a whole new kind of democracy: a bottom-up people's democracy led by the 99%. It is a bold vision for the future that is beginning to inspire the nation. However, to pull it off, we're going to need a robust people's media unbeholden to corporate money. If we want people's democracy then we've got to build a people's media -- the two are inseparable.

We want to be the people's media. Our first project is The Occupy Wall Street Journal, a four-page broadsheet newspaper with an ambitious print run of 50,000. It's aimed at the general public. The idea is to explain what the protest is about and profile different people who have joined and why they joined. We will explain the issues involved and how the general assembly process operates at Liberty Plaza. It will also offer resources and ways to join. The emphasis will be on quality content, design, photography and artwork that uses incisive humor to make it a lively read.

Future projects include longer editions of the newspaper, bold stickers, edgy posters, colorful palm cards and inspiring flyers.

This project is a volunteer effort: every penny you donate will go directly to printing and distribution.

i mention occupy wall street to someone via a facebook status. several people don't know what i am talking about. i remain calm and respectful and post articles and videos. response: "so someone got arrested for no reason? that's it?" my response: "it's much deeper than that. you should definitely do some research and learn the history that led up to these events." their response: "im asking you to just tell me and save me the time. if you already know just say it." save you the time? seriously? this frustrates me and saddens me. a lot. what happened to the thirst for knowledge? what happened to caring about your fellow stranger? do people realize that what goes on in the government and economy directly affect them? we need to just start shipping people to mars to fend for themselves.

Pam Wilson sat Wednesday at her spacious home in a suburb north of Toronto, next to her grand piano, surrounded by her cats and photographs of her grandson Mitchell Wilson, 11, who spent his summers at her cottage and called her “Mimi.”

Earlier in the day she had attended the Durham Regional Courthouse, in Oshawa, for the trial of the 12-year-old accused of bullying her grandson, knocking the boy’s face into the sidewalk, and stealing an iPhone that the boy carried.

But her grandson, whom she called “Mitch,” was not at the court hearing. He took his own life three weeks ago, Sept. 6. On Labour Day, the eve of the first day of school, he said goodnight to his father, Craig Wilson, and his stepmother, at their home in Pickering, east of Toronto, and then lay down in his bed with a plastic bag over his head. His father found him in the morning.

The bullying that her grandson suffered at his school, Westcreek Public School in Pickering, led the boy to lose his will to live, his grandmother said, breaking her silence on the case on Wednesday.

“He said to me, ‘Mimi, my biggest issue is that I can’t protect myself, and if a man cannot protect himself, then he is not a man,’” recalled Ms. Wilson.

Why Consciousness Matters
The essential hypothesis underlying the noetic sciences is simply that consciousness matters. The question is when, how, and why does it matter?

There are several ways we can know the world around us. Science focuses on external observation and is grounded in objective evaluation, measurement, and experimentation. This is useful in increasing objectivity and reducing bias and inaccuracy as we interpret what we observe. But another way of knowing is subjective or internal, including gut feelings, intuition, and hunches—the way you know you love your children, for example, or experiences you have that cannot be explained or proven “rationally” but feel absolutely real. This way of knowing is what we call noetic.

From a purely materialist, mechanistic perspective, all subjective—noetic—experience arises from physical matter, and consciousness is simply a byproduct of brain and body processes. But there is another perspective, suggesting a far more complex relationship between the physical and the nonphysical. The noetic sciences apply a scientific lens to the study of subjective experience and to ways that consciousness may influence the physical world, and the data to date have raised plenty of provocative new questions.

IONS sees noetic science as a growing field of valid inquiry. Every new discovery leads to more questions as the mystery of human consciousness slowly unfolds. This was one of the first true screamo bands I ever really got into after reading a review of them in some zine when I was a kid. For some fucked up reason, the reviewer compared them to Sharks Keep Moving, which is the stupidest thing ever because they aren't even nearly the same genre. However, this album is way underrated. I feel like they never got any attention. For fans of Tristan Tzara and Orchid... and their few sing-y parts remind me of Yaphet Kotto a little.
